Soil Gas Control Systems ANSI/AARST CC-1000 2018 in New Construction of Buildings 17 SECTION 9: EXHAUST LOCATIONS 9.1 General 9.1.1 Measuring distances Distance requirements shall be measured between the closest point of the exhaust opening to the closest point of all locations specified in Section 9 using the shortest stretched string distance from along a trajectory as if a string were stretched between them. 9.1.2 Defined: Openings in structures The term “Openings in structures” shall apply to openings created in a structure for windows, skylights, doors and other outdoor air intake openings. 9.1.3 Defined: Operable openings in structures The term “Operable openings” shall apply to the constantly open or operable portion of windows, skylights, doors and other outdoor air intake openings. 9.1.4 Defined: Exhaust trajectory The exhaust trajectory shall be based on the angle of the pipe or elbow at the point of exhaust. The angle of the exhaust trajectory is geometrically defined as the straight- or center-line axis that extends outward from the geometric center of the exhaust opening and is perpendicular to the plane of the exhaust opening. 9.1.5 Defined: Exhaust spread radius As defined herein, the exhaust spread extends outward from the point of exhaust in the shape of a circular cone. The tip or apex of the cone is at the geometric center of the exhaust opening and the cone profile grows larger as distance from the point of exhaust increases. The total directional spread of the exhaust or cone is defined in degrees by the offset-axis angle of the cone profile in degrees compared to the cone's center-line axis. Expanding outward from the point of exhaust: a) An exhaust spread radius of 45˚ represents an exhaust spread diameter of 90˚; and b) An exhaust spread radius of 11˚ represents an exhaust spread diameter of 22˚. 9.2 Outdoors. The point of exhaust for all soil gas vent systems shall be located outdoors. 9.3 Directional spread (restrictions) The exhaust trajectory with an exhaust spread radius of 45˚ shall not encounter openings in structures, building materials or the breathing space where individuals congregate or traverse within 10 feet (3 m) from the point of exhaust. 9.4 Straight-line trajectory (restrictions) The straight-line exhaust trajectory with an exhaust spread radius of 11˚ shall not encounter openings in structures, attic ventilation openings, building materials or the breathing space where individuals congregate or traverse within 20 feet (6 m) from the point of exhaust. Figure 9.3 Grey areas cannot contain building materials, openings in structures and the breathing space where people congregate or traverse. Straight-line 9.5 Elevation above grade The point of exhaust shall be located not less than 10 feet (3 m) above grade and be compliant with Section 9.3 Directional spread . 9.6 Roof The point of exhaust shall be compliant with Section 9.3 Directional spread and shall be: a) not less than 1 foot (30 cm) above a pitched roof at the point penetrated; b) not less than 18 inches (46 cm) above a flat roof; and c) directed upward at an angle that does not deviate more than 45 degrees from a vertical exhaust trajectory and labeled or marked in accordance with Section 8.10 . Exception: The point of exhaust shall be allowed to comply with ANSI/AARST RMS-LB or RMS-MF for exhausts lower than the roof for structures that exceed 75 feet (23 m) above grade or where all other requirements of Section 9 cannot be met due to the roof design.
